SEATTLE — The King County Prosecutor's Office said it is seeing a dramatic increase in retail thefts being charged. Local businesses say they’re experiencing more break-ins than ever before.

“Officers arrived to find the front door to the location had been shattered.”

“…broke decorations and threw pumpkins at house windows, causing thousands of dollars in damage…”

“There were no nearby surveillance cameras, but a trail of broken glass ran from the glass door to the front door, according to the police report.”

“Joe Mann who owns several buildings downtown, including Ron's Coin and Collectibles, said he's had 11 windows broken on his buildings this year alone. “

According to witnesses, the man had shattered one of the glass doors and entered the restaurant after they were closed.

“The City of Yakima aims to reduce vandalism cases by making neighborhood improvements to deter future criminal activity through graffiti abatement work,” said Randy Beehler, Communications and Public Affairs Director.

“The restaurant is known to be a community gathering place, so it is heartbreaking for the owners to see it happen again.”

“The unfortunate burglary we endured recently has left the staff feeling unsafe and they have all decided to move on.”

“All around Morgan Junction, you see this kind of stuff. You see more broken windows, more vandalism, more shattered glass. I don’t want to say that I’m scared but I’m definitely concerned.”

Multnomah County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man after a string of home and car break-ins in Wood Village Saturday afternoon.

The Renton church was targeted this week. A spokesperson for the church says the campus was “covered with spray paint” and the “beautiful stained glass windows at St. Anthony’s were broken.”

The homeowners told officers they awoke to the sound of their front door being kicked in.

They are suspected of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to businesses, according to investigators.

Police says Bivens broke a window at Congregation Shir Tikvah at Northeast 24th and Sandy Blvd. on April 30th.

“My sister and I were sitting at a table eating and the man walks up to the window in front of us, looked at both of us and threw a ketchup bottle right at the window directed at us,” one witness wrote. “He looked me in the eye when… he threw the ketchup bottle at me.”

Hanshaw eventually gained entry to the home, telling Bergquist, “I need help. They’re trying to kill me.”

The Washington State Auto Dealers Association said the security measures businesses are currently taking are too expensive to be sustainable.

Another Walgreens in Western Washington was damaged after a vehicle appeared to have crashed into the entrance Thursday morning.
